ABOUT
I’m Michaela, an artist from the quiet corners of Southland, New Zealand. Most of the time, you’ll find me creating super-detailed drawings—typically inclusive of flowers—though I like to spice things up by pairing them with unexpected objects. Think of it as a botanical cocktail with a twist of man-made weirdness. Every piece I create has a message or theme, whether it’s inspired by current events, social issues, memories, or just something that’s been bouncing around in my head for a while.
I love playing with contrasts—putting together elements that seem at odds to each other, but end up working when placed just so. My goal? To get people thinking, talking, and maybe even a little uncomfortable. Art, in my opinion, is supposed to spark conversation, not just hang quietly on a wall.
When it comes to the nitty-gritty of making art, I’m a bit of a perfectionist (shocking, right?). I use super-fine ink pens on smooth, high-quality paper, and I’ll add a bit of ink wash or coloured markers if the mood calls for it. If not, I’m happy to leave it in its black-and-white glory. My style is very literal, what you see is what it is whether it makes sense or not is kind of the point. I can’t help but enjoy the precision the pens give me—clean lines, zero smudges, and full control. There’s just something about that sharpness that helps curb the OCD!
At the end of the day, my work isn’t just about making something pretty (though I do like a good floral). It’s about making a statement. So, if you’re into art that challenges the norm, sparks some introspection, or just makes you look twice, you’ve come to the right place.
